Dry vs Dehydrated skin, know the difference

Dry skin and dehydrated skin are two common skin conditions that often get confused with each other. While both can leave your skin feeling tight and uncomfortable, they have different underlying causes and require different approaches for treatment. MYTH BUSTER:

“If I drink allot of water my skin will be hydrated!”

Did you know that when you drink water, it doesn’t go straight to your skin? Instead, it runs through the intestines, absorbs into the bloodstream, and then gets filtered out by the kidneys. At this point, it will hydrate the cells inside the body. (It’s just not possible for the water to head straight to the cells in the outer layer of the skin (the epidermis).

According to research, drinking water can hydrate the Dermis which is a deeper layer of skin in which connective tissues and blood vessels are found. when we drink water, it goes into our blood and the blood vessels go to our dermis. There was also strong evidence to support that drinking water can improve overall skin elasticity. However, it’s simply not hydrating the outer layer of the skin ( Epidermis). while it’s still important to drink water for your overall health and well-being, it’s simply not an effective way to hydrate your skin.

For dehydrated skin, focus on replenishing moisture and restoring the skin's hydration levels. Here are some tips:

1. Hydrating skincare products: Look for products that contain hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid, aloe vera, or glycerin. These ingredients help attract and retain moisture in the skin.

2. Use a hydrating face mask: Incorporate a hydrating face mask into your skincare routine once or twice a week to provide an extra boost of moisture.

What 4 ingredients should you avoid when buying your facial cleanser?

One of the most important step in your skincare routine is cleansing your skin.

I recommend cleansing your skin in the morning and double cleanse at night especially if you wear makeup.

It is important to wash your skin with a non drying sulfate free cleanser.

Why is that ? Are you asking..

Because it will strip out the moisture barrier of your skin, leaving it dehydrated..

Sulfates are a menace to your skin! Really you would be amazed on how many skincare products out there contain Sulfates.

Here is a list of 4 Sulfates to avoid.

1. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate

   This is the most common Sulfate in skincare products. It’s also the most damaging to the skin. It will strip out your skin of its own moisture and can create irritation or causes eczema flare ups.

2. Sodium Laureth Sulfate

   Slightly milder than it’s predecessor but still dehydrating to your skin.

3. Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate

   Often uses in low PH cleansers but still will dehydrate your skin.

4. Ammonium Laureth Sulfate

   Yes! That one too. It will dehydrate your skin.

   Before you buy your next cleanser, look at the label and of course make sure it does not contain any of those iingredients.

   Instead look for one of those ingredients below that are safe and will NOT break the moisture barrier of your skin!

   Cocamidopropyl Hydroxysultaine

   Disodium Lauraminopropionate

   Cocamidopropyl Betaine

   Disodium Cocoamphodiacetate

   Disodium Cocoyl Glutamate

what's a Lamprobe treatment?

Every clients seeks to have clear, smooth and flawless skin. Unfortunately as we age we notice a greater amount of skin abnormalities appearing on the surface of the skin. Some of those skin irregularities are related to sun over exposure.

Various skin abnormalities or lesions also tend to appear more in certain ethnic populations. Minor skin irregularities such as age spots, telangiectasia (broken capillaries), skin tags are more commonly found in certain ethnic groups. For example , fibromas appear more frequently on more pigmented skin and broken capillaries are more visible on the cheeks or nose of caucasian skins.

Most people have one or more of these minor skin conditions that they find undesirable and esthetically unpleasing. I personally call them barnacles, yes just like an old ship :)), i get them too! (cherry angiomas, skin tags and sebaceous keratosis).

Minor skin irregularities according to age :

Mature skins: Seborrheic keratoses, skin tags, cholesterol deposits, flat and raised age spots, cherry angiomas.

Aging/ elderly skin: skin tags, seborrheic keratoses, age spots raised or flat, cherry angiomas, fibromas.

Here comes the Lamprobe to the rescue! it’s actually the name of this Electrocautery device created by Pat and hubert Lam.

The Lamprobe is a modern evolution from traditional electrocautery, enabling the non-invasive treatment of superficial minor skin irregularities with limited discomfort. Various size of probes are being used to target the unwanted superficial skin irregularities without affecting surrounding tissues.

The Lamprobe treats these superficial irregularities irregularities non invasively and rapidly! 3 to 5 seconds. Skin tags and larger irregularities might take a little longer.

The discomfort during the treatment is tolerable, you will feel a slight zappy stingy feel. No anesthetic required.

After the treatment an antibiotic cream or ointment is applied to the area of treatment. The cosmetic area may feel irritated at first and a scab will form. The scab is a way for the skin to heal itself. Once the scab falls off on it’s own, the skin will slightly be pinkish and smooth. later it will resume it’ s normal coloring.

Fall and winter season is the ideal time to seek the lamprobe treatment as we are not exposing are skin to the sun.

Let me give you the 101 on Dermaplaning.

Dermaplaning is a minimal invasive procedure, it is a form of manual exfoliation. An esthetician grade, sterile blade will be used to gently scrape away dead skin cells.

Dermaplaning also temporarily removes the fine vellus hair of the face (peach fuzz) leaving a very smooth surface. As with any exfoliation, the removal of dead skin cells allows your skincare product to be more effective, reduces the appearance of fine lines, evens the skin tone and helps with minor breakouts associated with congested pores.

Dermaplaning is fine for most skin types especially those with sun damage, fine lines, dry patches and dull skin.

i would not recommend Dermaplaning if you have active breakouts, Rosacea or have hyper sensitive skin.

Eat balanced meals at regular time, drink plenty of water, take a multi vitamin and make sure you get plenty of rest. Taking care of your skin is self-care, when your skin looks good you feel more confident and ready to conquer the world!! ;))

4. ENVIRONMENTAL: to practice environmental self-care is to take care of the place around you and the places you love. Make your bedroom peaceful, declutter, re-organize your closet or kitchen cabinet. Take a walk in nature and fully appreciate the moment.

5. SPIRITUAL: Spiritual self-care involves activities that gives you a sense of meaning to your life. Find a community, volunteer. identify values that are most important to you.

6. RECREATIONAL: It’ s important to make time for hobbies, fun activities and new experiences. Take up golfing, tennis, gardening, go see a movie or go to the museum…..

7. SOCIAL: Build relationship and make healthy connections with healthy boundaries. Connect with friends that elevate you!

My routine for an everyday look is to take a neutral matte color in a light brown (Mac Soba) apply it using the windshield wiper technique slightly above my crease so it creates the illusion of a bigger lower eye lid space. If I have the time and want more of a complete look , I will apply a lighter matte shade on the lower lid to really make it pop! also I would apply very lightly a highlighter on the brow bone to give a lifting effect.

Sometimes it's about the little things!!

Happy Friday!! I ’am sharing with you my daily life rituals that have drastically improved my life for the best!!

1.The first thing I like to do in the morning is open up the blinds and look into my backyard. I take a few deep breath as I join my palms together above my head (Namaste pose). I repeat this motion 2 or 3 times, i am a side sleeper so that’s my way of stretching my upper body. I then practice gratitude by going down the list of people and things i am grateful for, instantly, that gives me an over all feeling of well being.

2. I know it’s gonna sound silly, but this next ritual i came up with for those days when i wake up and feel that dark cloud above my head. When I feel this way I want to go back under the covers and not come out!! EVER! My remedy, is to induce positive energy so I just pretend, “woohoo I won the lottery!!!” or “This is the BEST DAY of my life!!” I start cheering, dancing, jumping and letting that flow of happy energy come into me! i am telling you it’s like i rewire my brain and it works like magic!! the cloud is gone and i can move forward with my day.

3.First thing in the morning, before i start preparing my breakfast, i drink a cold glass of water (8oz to 16oz) on an empty stomach, this helps to flush out the toxins from the body and give a boost to my metabolism! ( as i need all the help i can get!!).

4. BE PRESENT! this is easier said than done. I am trying to make a conscious effort and be mindful and present in the moment! when i am successful at doing this, i feel more focused and have more energy which makes me feel happier!

5. I take a nap!! yes, i have no shame, if i can squeeze in a nap, I WILL DO IT!! i set up my timer on my phone for 30 minutes and catch some ZZZZZ…. i feel refreshed afterwards and ready to go on with my day!

6. Last but not least, i practice selfcare as a way to tell myself, my body and my soul, that i matter.

Should you change your skincare routine for the Summer?

The answer is a big YES!

Adjusting your skincare routine throughout the different seasons is essential for maintaining glowing skin all year round. In the same way that you wouldn't wear a thick sweater during the summer! You need to lighten up your skincare routine.

For you ladies who have combo to oily skin (That’s me 😊)

Your skin might get oilier as the heat and humidity is rising.

1.cleanse your skin morning and evening, I recommend double cleansing at night if you are wearing makeup.

2. Apply serums, they are lighter in texture and penetrate the skin faster and deeper.

3. SPF, SPF, SPF.. i can’t say it enough! If you want to keep those wrinkles and dark pigment at bay, it’s a must!! I recommend at least an SPF 30, you will need to reapply if you are out in the sun at least every 2 hours. I use a tinted one during the summer in place of a foundation.

For you ladies with normal to dry skin

1. Cleanse morning and evening with your favorite cleanser, double cleanse at night if you are wearing makeup.

2. Serums

Do you know what's the #1 anti aging product?

Your sunblock!! It prevents premature aging by protecting the essential skin proteins, collagen, elastin, keratin not to mention lower the risk of skin cancer.

Do you know the difference between UVA and UVB rays?

UVA ( aging) can cause premature aging such as wrinkles, pigmentations and age spots while UVB (burning) rays are responsible for tanning and sunburn.

Do you know the difference between a sunblock and sunscreen?

Sunblock A.K.A physical sunscreen contains minerals ( Titanium dioxide or Zinc) that are laying on top of your skin creating a barrier and preventing UVA and UVB from Penetrating the skin by reflecting the UV’s out.

Sunscreen A.K.A chemical sunscreen contain ingredients ( Oxybenzone, Avobenzone, Octosalate…) that absorb the UV rays. Chemical sunscreens are not recommended for sensitive skin as it can create inflammations within the skin. Make sure when shopping for a sunscreen it says on the label Broad spectrum which protect you from UVA and UVB.

Do you know what SPF stand for?

Sun protection factor. the number next to SPF reflects the amount of time you can be in the sun and avoid burning.

SPF 15 will block about 93% of UV rays

SPF 30 will block about 97%

SPF 50 will block about 98%

SPF 100 will block about 99%

Because I have sensitive skin I am partial to mineral sunblock, I use 1/4 tsp for my face and neck.

For the body I use SPF 30 and reapply every 2 hours.
